In Shakespearean comedy, all problems appear to be resolved by the promise of marriage. Yet Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night’s
Dream expose tensions, variously depicting forced marriage, pharmaceutical subterfuge and elaborately contrived fictions of infidelity. We will explore what happens when comedy becomes uncomfortable, disturbing, or disruptive.
