From the late 18th century, industrialisation was radically altering Britain. The Romantics saw tragedy, Austen comedy. They wrote with a determination to expose the coarsening of the national character and create a literature exploring the 'meddling intellect' with a sustained vibrancy that makes this one of Britain's richest literary periods.
