Within three generations, Europe went through revolutionary changes that would change the western world. The certainties of 18th-century society were thrown into confusion first by revolution in British America and then by even more radical revolution in France. The ideas and ideals of these years also sparked terror and war, leading to faith in nationalism and liberty and to fears of anarchy. Finally, in 1848, the European continent was engulfed in revolt in a chaotic year of revolutions, which all – eventually – failed, but which nevertheless changed the world and brought our modern world into being. This is a 10 session course and must be taken with W210Pm03 in week 2.
