Major trials can reveal much about the society in which they happen. This course will look at five historic trials: Warren Hastings's impeachment for tyranny in Bengal; Oscar Wilde's disastrous libel action against the Marquess of Queensberry; the treason trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus which tore the French Third Republic in two; the Nuremberg Trial, which first established the legal responsibility of national leaders; and the Holocaust denier David Irving's libel trial against Penguin Books, which put the historical process itself in the judicial spotlight.
