Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

The deadline for booking a place on this course has passed. Please use the 'Ask a Question' button to register your interest in future or similar courses.

French music during the reign of Louis XIV was refined, idiosyncratic, full of character, and had huge influence in Europe. This course will focus on chamber, orchestral, choral, harpsichord and organ music from 1660 to 1715, as performed in the context of Versailles, the cathedrals, the châteaux and the salons. Its profound influence on the rest of Europe, particularly Germany, including J S Bach, and England, including Purcell, will also be analysed and discussed. A recital of harpsichord music will be included as part of the course.
