From its murky beginnings in the 18th century, through the great Victorian statesmen and wartime leaders, to today’s controversies of Brexit and Boris Johnson, the office of Prime Minister has always been at the centre of controversy. It has shaped British politics, changed British society, made and maybe broken the United Kingdom itself. But what does it mean to be Prime Minister? How much power does the office command? This course will look at the development of this highest office in the land from the Georgians to Johnson. Find out what has changed – and what has stayed the same.
