Join this thematic course to explore French Impressionist paintings by key artists including Monet, Renoir and Morisot as well as less well-known but important Impressionist contributors. We will discuss the critical reception of Impressionism during the 1870s and 1880s and the broader socio-historical context. The influence of Paris - the capital of art in the 19th century – will be discussed as an inspiration for painting modern city life. We will also think about the role of models in paintings and look at significant works by women artists. Some paintings will be looked at slowly in order to unpack significant features.
