If Britain helped create modern India, so India helped shape Britain. The British had a presence in India for three and a half centuries, from a small trading presence on the edges of the Mughal Empire to control of the whole subcontinent. What relationship developed between British and Indians? This course will look at familiar stories and figures, like Clive or Kipling, but it will also look at the strange inter-depedence that developed between these two very different peoples, and at the curious almost-British world which the British created for themselves. This is a 10 session course and must be taken with W410Am05 in week 4.
