How might the places in which artists were working influence their creative responses? This course explores a selection of modern, innovative paintings from the mid-19th to mid-20th century. Looking at key works made in cities including Paris, Oslo and New York, as well as in remote rural areas, we will discuss artists including Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo to consider the significance of place in their experimental work. This is a 10 session course and must be taken with W410Pm03 in week 4.
