Intermediate Greek courses will present light-hearted yet academically rigorous adventures in ancient Greek literature for students wanting to explore the original Greek of major authors like Homer and Herodotus, Sophocles and Thucydides, Euripides and Plato. Some previous knowledge is necessary (e.g. rusty O or A Level, or degree). This course level is aimed at those who have (or have had) a secure grasp of the fundamentals of the ancient Greek language and who would like to strengthen their language skills while reading some classic Greek texts in their original form.
The set text(s) for this weekend are: JACT Reading Greek (2nd ed., CUP, 2007) Section 18 A-E (Plato Protagoras passages);
JACT A Greek Anthology (CUP, 2002) Section 11 (Plato Apology of Socrates), and Section 13 (Xenophon Oeconomicus). There are also preparation notes for the grammar session (uses of the subjunctive and optative). Please contact shortcourses@ice.cam.ac.uk to obtain copies.
