Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

Empires arose in the ancient Americas, as they did in the Old World and, just as in the Old World, were very diverse. Although their vivid histories were cut short as Spain tried to forge its own empire 500 years ago, the best-known examples are the Aztecs and Incas. Scholarly interpretations have varied markedly, but the Incas' mighty organisation was similar, in ways, to Old World empires. In contrast, the Aztecs' apparent reliance on terror was so flimsy that we can ask whether they were imperialists. Answers may depend on which evidence we select: administration, economics, propaganda … A lesson for studying any empire.
