Empires arose in the ancient Americas, as they did in the Old World and, just as in the Old World, were very diverse. Although their vivid histories were cut short as Spain tried to forge its own empire 500 years ago, the best-known examples are the Aztecs and Incas. Scholarly interpretations have varied markedly, but the Incas' mighty organisation was similar, in ways, to Old World empires. In contrast, the Aztecs' apparent reliance on terror was so flimsy that we can ask whether they were imperialists. Answers may depend on which evidence we select: administration, economics, propaganda … A lesson for studying any empire.

Who can book?

Our weekend courses are open to participants over the age of 18 and courses are taught at approximately first-year undergraduate level. No academic qualifications are required and most courses are suitable for students who are new to the subject. Please ensure that you complete any required reading before the course starts to enable you to fully participate.

English language requirements

Teaching is in English (unless a foreign-language course). If your first language is not English, you will need to satisfy yourself that you have the required near-native command of the language to get the maximum benefit from studying with ICE.
