Through most of history the world has been Darwinian. Strong states preyed upon weak ones and disputes were habitually settled by war. Over the past 150 years however, rising economic interdependence and military destructiveness have led to an increasingly urgent search for a better way of managing international affairs. After the Cold War, a global system emerged, dominated by the United States and acting on the basis of multinational agreements, international law and the hope that universal democracy would lead to universal peace. That system is now breaking down. Democracy and human rights are on the defensive. Rival powers - notably Russia and China - are challenging US hegemony. Great Power war may be coming back, as in Ukraine. Cooperation to tackle global threats such as nuclear proliferation and climate change is visibly under stress. We look at these developments and ask where we may be going. This is a 10 session course and must be taken with W310Am01 in week 3.
