The Next Generation Bursary is intended to support recent University of Cambridge graduates and current postdoctoral researchers to undertake further career-relevant learning against the backdrop of a highly challenging economic context.

The bursary will give up to 100 Cambridge graduates and postdoctoral researchers a subsidy worth up to £2,100 to part-fund eligible postgraduate courses. The bursary applies to the following postgraduate courses commencing in the Michaelmas term of the 2021-22 academic year:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Practical Science Communication
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Genomic Medicine
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Philosophy


The bursary is open to anyone who falls into one of the following three categories:

  • A University of Cambridge graduate who graduated in 2020 (anyone who has completed a course whereby they were a member of a College eg BA, MPhil, MSt, MRes, full-time Adv Dip etc.);
  • A University of Cambridge graduate who will graduate by 1 July 2021 (anyone who has completed a course whereby they were a member of a College eg BA, MPhil, MSt, MRes, full-time Adv Dip etc.);
  • A University of Cambridge postdoctoral researcher who is currently employed by the University.

How to apply

You are asked to complete the full course application process to be considered for the bursary. The process is as follows:

1. You are asked to complete an online application for your chosen course(s).

Please note, course applications must be completed in full for you to be considered for the bursary scheme.

2. The Institute of Continuing Education will assess and respond to applications as quickly as possible to inform you whether your application for the course and the bursary have been accepted.

3. Once you have accepted your course place and paid the first instalment, you can apply for the bursary here.

Within the bursary application form there is a section for you to confirm your category and upload proof of your eligibility.

4. If no additional evidence is required, your bursary will be awarded and will be automatically taken off the final course installments. 

The bursary application closing date is 31 May 2021.
