International development: key issues in today's world

In this course we explore the various factors that shape so called ‘under-development’ and deprivation in the world today. Using examples from a range of low and middle-income countries, we discuss the various ways in which individuals, organisations and governments try to deal with poverty and improve conditions of inequality in the long-term. We will begin with a general overview, looking at the history and definitions of the key concepts related to international development and the differences between economic growth and human development. This includes the various moral and economic standpoints in relation to the improvement of quality of life for the poor and excluded. Session two will focus on the key determinants of human welfare and how the international community has framed these issues as part of the Millennium Development Goals. The following seven sessions will drill down into the various challenges and issues faced by many people in low and middle income countries. Using case studies and interactive resources, we will look at the role of education, gender equality and health and their importance for human development. This will set the context for the discussion of other critical topics such as: food security and the causes and consequences of famines; the human development challenges associated with climate change; and the complex relationships between population growth, migration and urbanisation. In our last session we will try and take a look into the future by examining the discussions regarding international approaches and targets to improve conditions in many areas of the world.
