This lavishly-illustrated course looks at Scotland’s heritage of fortifications and the histories that lay behind their development, maintenance and eventual decline. Beginning with the prehistoric - crannogs, duns, brochs - it leads on to the country’s castellated medieval period. Scotland is renowned for its castles, frequently set against the background of stunning landscapes. Next, it considers the structures built by the Hanoverian state in the wake of the Jacobite uprisings. Finally, it reviews the fortifications of the 20th century, when key parts of the Scottish coast were more heavily fortified than anywhere else in the UK.

Accessibility for students with support requirements

We make every effort both to anticipate and to make reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of students with support requirements including those with unseen disabilities, including mental health conditions, and specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia.
